When we enter puberty, our bodies start producing more androgen hormone, whether we’re male or female. This hormone increases the size of the oil glands, producing more oil which causes blocked pores. This encourages the growth of bacteria and then, ta-da! You have acne.
As we get through this phase and our hormones settle down, it should end the acne too, but there are a few other factors that may cause acne in adulthood. Unfortunately, these creams can have side effects, not to mention being expensive. They can cause dryness and irritation and in some cases, it can completely alter the way the sebaceous glands work.
But you don’t have to go through all that when the solution is right at home – in your kitchen! Yes, simple everyday things in your kitchen are effective at treating acne, perhaps even more than an OTC cream. Here are 7 kitchen ingredients for acne treatment – without side effects!

1. Raw Honey
For years now, honey has been used to treat all kinds of skin conditions, including wounds and burns. With its superb anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, acne is a piece of cake for honey!
Raw honey is also rich in several plant antioxidants that clear out clogged pores and keep them healthy. It inhibits the growth of bacteria and offers other benefits like moisturization and nourishment. However, it’s important to note that refined and processed honey may have less pollen and spores which are responsible for these benefits.
Honey can be applied as is on the face and left on for 15 minutes. It can also be mixed with cinnamon for some extra power and then rinsed off after half an hour with lukewarm water. Honey also works as a spot treatment – use a cotton bud or Q tip to apply a little honey to the affected spots.
2. Green Tea
Green tea is popular among weight watchers and those trying to get in their daily dose of antioxidants. It is these very antioxidants that makes green tea great to tackle acne.
Many cases of acne are due to naturally oily skin. The main compound in green tea, EGCG is known to help reduce sebum production that nips the problem in the bud. Moreover, it fights inflammation, soothing the skin. Green tea also contains catechins, a kind of polyphenol antioxidants. These antioxidants clear out clogged cells and fight free radicals.
To get the benefits of green tea, you can either take a chilled bag and place it over the affected area, or go ahead and brew the tea and let it cool. Use ACV by diluting it, not in its concentrated form. Mix 1 part ACV and 3 parts water and apply all over skin with a cotton pad or ball.
