When we think of makeup, the first thing which comes to mind is a lipstick. A lipstick is one of the most widely used, universal makeup staple of all women and therefore, it is important to make it safer for them.
Did you know that the use of lipsticks first began in 1880s when the flair for theater arts became popular? During this time however, women were not comfortable with wearing lipstick in broad daylight and therefore preferred to show off their vibrant colored lips in the comfort of their home. Later on, with the popularity of lipsticks, women were comfortable wearing them outside as an expression of feminism.
Wearing a lipstick makes any woman confident in their own skin. Throughout history, women have always worn lipstick to make themselves more noticeable and attractive. Lipstick draws attention to the lips and makes them stand out. Some women may wear lipstick to feel better about their appearance. Other women enjoy the ability to express their unique artistic style. Colors and ingredients have changed over the centuries, but the purpose for wearing lipstick remains the same: to express inner beauty with outer self. Whatever the reason, conscious or subconscious, lipstick has been used throughout the ages to enhance and draw attention to lips, thus adding to a woman’s overall attractiveness and ability to express individuality. But is this staple makeup product safe to use?
Lipsticks come with some unavoidable side-effects, thanks to its manufacturing materials. Many lipsticks contain lead, which is extremely harmful and causes irreversible health damage. They cause allergy, irritation, and chapping on the lips and the surrounding skin. Certain harmful chemicals and heavy metals can also cause cancer. Lipsticks contain harmful heavy metals like cadmium, magnesium and chromium. All these metals can cause dangerous diseases and organ damage. Extremely high amounts of cadmium can increase the risk of renal failure. Frequent application of lipstick can cause severe stomach tumors. Lipsticks are worn most of the time, including when eating out. Women ingest them accidentally while eating, long after they are applied. This increases the impact of the toxins present in lipsticks. The lipstick or lip gloss result in women exceeding the daily intake permitted for aluminum, cadmium, chromium and manganese. These accumulate in the body over time and cause toxicity.
